Lymphatic Massage

What is Lymphatic Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a treatment aimed at stimulating the Lymphatic system – the body’s immune system. The job of our lymph glands, found in the neck, armpits and groin, is to fight infection. If our lymphatic system isn’t working properly then we will be more prone to illness. The lymphatic system is a series of vessels throughout the body that drain fluid from tissues.

Bacteria and other microbes are picked up in the lymphatic fluid (lymph) and are trapped inside lymph nodes, where they can be attacked and destroyed by white blood cells. Common problems of the lymphatic system include glandular fever, Hodgkin’s disease, tonsillitis and oedema (swelling). Using lymphatic massage for oedema when pregnant will take away some of the retaining fluid and ease the tension, mainly in the extremities.

When will I see results?

The results of lymphatic drainage massage will depend on how long your system has been compromised and how aggressive your condition is. You can discuss your situation with your therapist and determine the best course of action. It may be that you need to schedule a few regular treatments to get things moving, and then space out your appointments as your condition improves.
